An Albany woman spent weeks building a bomb with the FBI's help before agents arrested her a mile from the building she wanted to blow up.

Federal agents arrested Albany resident Jessica Bowie, 35, Wednesday after a monthslong sting in which she told FBI informants she wanted to bomb the state Capitol and "kill the senators while they are meeting," according to a criminal complaint [34]. Bowie, who told agents she'd pledged allegiance to ISIS and goes by Aisha Saif, scouted the Capitol five times, bought bomb-making materials at a Rensselaer Home Depot and asked for a gun to shoot any officer who intervened, prosecutors say [25]. She's charged with attempting to provide material support to a designated terrorist organization and is being held without bail in Schenectady County [25]. The FBI says it has thwarted similar Capitol plots twice before, in 2004 and 2016 [20].
“I want to destroy as much of the building as possible and kill the senators while they are meeting. I want them to lose a lot of important documents as well.”
“While there is no immediate threat at this time, we will continue working closely with our law enforcement partners to protect New Yorkers and keep our communities safe.”
City Hall put a number on the housing shortage that's three and a half times bigger than the mayor's own building plan.

New York City needs 700,000 new homes over the next decade to fix a 1.4% vacancy rate, the lowest in decades, according to a draft report the city's Department of Housing Preservation and Development released Wednesday under a 2023 City Council mandate [58]. The total, tallying an immediate shortage plus a decade of growth and pent-up demand, more than triples the 200,000 units in Mayor Mamdani's own "Block by Block" housing plan [48]. The draft sets five-year production targets for each of the city's 59 community districts, pushing low-growth areas like the Upper East Side and Staten Island to build more, while Staten Island's Council delegation says the city hasn't consulted residents on the flooding and transit strain that comes with it [58].
“This report puts an even bigger number on New York's housing shortage and confirms that supply is at the heart of the affordability crisis.”
“To overcome our housing crisis, we need every neighborhood in every borough to do its part.”

A birthday cookout at a Nassau beach club ended with the roof gone and furniture flying across the sand.

A pair of waterspouts came ashore as apparent tornadoes off the Rockaways in Queens and Atlantic Beach in Nassau County Thursday evening, tearing the roofs off 30 cabanas at the Sun and Surf Beach Club and flooding the BQE and LIE [101][104]. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman declared a state of emergency and activated the county's Emergency Operations Center as crews checked cabanas for anyone trapped [107]. One beach club worker was injured but refused medical attention; the National Weather Service is surveying the damage Friday to officially confirm whether a tornado actually touched down [104][107].
“We're right by Kennedy Airport. I thought it was a big loud jet flying over.”
“There is property damage at Silver Point Beach Club and Sun and Surf that is being assessed right now, and a search team has been mobilized to make sure no one is trapped within the cabanas.”

A man fishing off Manhattan pulled a small shark out of the Hudson River Wednesday night, giving the city's rats some unexpected competition for the title of New York's most surprising wildlife [148].
