A falling tree killed NYCHA worker Leighton Brown, 56, in East New York on Saturday, and the heaviest flooding is forecast around Sunday's 9 a.m. high tide.
Brown was walking through the parking lot at 700 Euclid Ave., at the Cypress Hills Houses, when the tree came down; NYCHA confirmed he worked for the authority but not whether he was on duty [10]. Coastal flooding had already reached the Rockaways, Howard Beach, Hamilton Beach, Staten Island's North Shore, southern Brooklyn and City Island, and the MTA suspended the LIRR's Long Beach Branch [25]. Hochul declared emergencies for the city, Westchester and Long Island and barred empty tractor-trailers and tandem trucks from MTA bridges and tunnels [29]. The Global Citizen Festival in Central Park and All Things Go at Forest Hills Stadium are canceled [25].

Buyers have not gone away; they are buying resales instead [20]. More than 60 percent of the remaining new inventory sits in the Financial District and Midtown, including One Wall Street and the Waldorf-Astoria conversion, which Compass's Dan Parker calls "stubborn inventory" [20]. Relief is thin: Corcoran Sunshine projects about 1,500 new Manhattan units a year from 2026 to 2029, roughly 16 percent below pre-2021 levels [20].

Lackawanna finally moved City Hall out of its 1969 annex, an orange steel box on stilts a former mayor called "the ugliest building on planet Earth." The current mayor, Annette Iafallo, says the building swayed in the wind, and in bad storms "my secretary had snow in her windows coming in." The new $16 million City Hall is a renovated Knights of Columbus hall on South Park Avenue. Demolition of the annex starts late next summer, and Iafallo has plans for it: "I'm trying to beg somebody to let me drive that piece of machinery" [2].
