Brooklyn's trash bags come off the sidewalk

Sanitation began installing more than 700 curbside Empire Bins across Downtown Brooklyn, Boerum Hill, Dumbo, Clinton Hill and the Navy Yard, and once the rollout is done, piles of trash bags will no longer be allowed there.

Mayor Mamdani and Sanitation Commissioner Gregory Anderson installed the first bin in Brooklyn Heights Thursday. The bins sit in parking spaces in front of buildings with more than 30 units, and side-loading trucks lift and empty them; recycling bags can still go out on the curb [78][89]. Next year the bins go to Hunts Point, University Heights, Sunnyside, the West Village, Prospect Heights and Staten Island's North Shore [78].

“For too long, New Yorkers have had to walk past mountains of trash bags piled high on the curb that offer feasts for rats and stink up our streets. We’re changing that.”
Zohran Mamdani, mayor · [78]
“If it gets rid of the rats, it's a good thing, but make it easier for people to park,”
Clarence Gilliam, driver parking near the Navy Yard · [78]
“and these mechanical arms, it’s much easier on their backs and shoulders, and it’s also safer,”

The marathon reroutes through the Bronx

For the first time in 15 years, the New York City Marathon changed its course, and in the Bronx it now skips the turn that cut Patterson Houses residents off from their supermarket.

The pied-à-terre tax shrinks before the first bill

The Finance Department has granted more than 8,800 of roughly 11,000 exemption requests, so fewer than 9,000 homes now owe the second-home surcharge, and Mayor Mamdani still says it will raise $500 million.

The surcharge hits non-primary homes worth more than $5 million and faces three lawsuits, including one from Steve Wynn and Wilbur Ross [12]. The Real Deal reports a Park Slope owner who lives in his house was billed $47,504 because he owns only half of the LLC that holds it; the city later granted him an exemption [72]. Blakeman has promised to cancel the tax if elected [12].

“No matter what the numbers are, the city says, ‘We’re confident we’ll hit the $500 million,’”
Ben Williams, property tax attorney at Rosenberg & Estis · [12]
“The statute governing the surcharge allows property owners, under certain circumstances, to demonstrate that they are not subject to the surcharge because their property is used as primary residence,”
Department of Finance spokesperson · [72]
