The Plaza Hotel shuts for four years

The Plaza closes in January 2027 for a facade restoration that will keep it dark until at least 2031, and its 378 union workers keep a right to return.

Fairmont, which runs the 1907 landmark at Fifth Avenue and Central Park South, announced the closure Wednesday; the Palm Court and the event rooms go dark with it [81][78]. The city has deemed the facade unsafe, and new rules would let $6,000 monthly fines start in January [73]. Condo owners will not have to move out [73]. The weddings already booked there are in limbo [73].

“I’ve heard there’s only one or two suppliers that can provide the materials needed to modernize the facade,”
Virginia Maloney, Council Member for the district · [73]
“I am concerned about the workers who will get health care and benefits but likely to be without wages for the entire duration,”

Citi Bike reaches seven more neighborhoods

Citi Bike finished 230 new stations in Norwood, Riverdale, Brownsville, East New York, Kensington, Bay Ridge and Forest Hills, and the price of riding went up with it.

DOT and Lyft finished the expansion Thursday, adding 3,700 docks [85]. Next, Lyft plans more docks where bikes run out, including Greenpoint, Chelsea and Midtown East [82]. Staten Island still has none [85]. The city has little say over pricing until Lyft's contract expires in 2029 [85].

A judge throws out Trump's suit against NYC sanctuary laws

U.S. District Judge Ramón Reyes dismissed the Justice Department's challenge to the city's sanctuary laws, ruling the federal government lacked standing.

Reyes also ruled that forcing local officials to help with immigration enforcement would violate constitutional limits on federal power [14]. The ruling came a week after an ICE agent shot Oscar Belgal in Marble Hill [14]. The Justice Department did not immediately comment [14]. City law already lets the city honor ICE detainers for people convicted of 177 listed felonies [35].

“This is a victory for New Yorkers and a rebuke to ICE’s deportation agenda,”
Zohran Mamdani, mayor · [14]

For weeks, Thomas Obersteiner and his wife on the Upper West Side kept running into their kids' bedroom at night, sure a child was screaming. It was barn owls: a family nesting in a water tower on West 75th Street, the first documented barn owl nest in Manhattan in recorded history, according to Cornell's Andrew Farnsworth. Birder David Barrett has counted at least one adult and five fledglings, and seen an adult hauling rodents home. Obersteiner now lets photographers onto his roof deck almost every night. "We can’t say no because it’s so much fun and these people are so serious," he said. [132]
