NYC holiday hours in 2026: transit, parking, trash, mail, banks and museums

Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's: which days the subway runs a Sunday schedule, when you can skip the street-cleaning rules, and who is closed. Last year's pattern, labelled as such.

The short answer

Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, 2026, Christmas Day is Friday, December 25, and New Year's Day is Friday, January 1, 2027. NYC DOT suspends alternate-side parking and meters on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, the Federal Reserve is closed on all three, and the Staten Island Ferry runs its weekend schedule. The MTA's 2026 holiday plans are not announced yet; in 2025 the subway ran a Sunday schedule on all three days. Dates checked September 2026.

What is confirmed, and what is not

The city has published its 2026 alternate-side parking and sanitation holiday lists, and the Federal Reserve has published its dates, but the MTA, the Postal Service and the Staten Island Ferry have not announced 2026 holiday operations (checked September 2026). So each table below has a 2026 column and a last-year column. The last year column is the 2025-26 pattern, labelled as such, and not a promise. The weekdays moved: Christmas Day and New Year's Day fell on Thursdays last year and are Fridays this year, so last year's pattern is a guide, not a forecast.

What to do with this

Our advice, not the operators': treat a Sunday schedule as the likely outcome for Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day, and a regular or lightly reduced weekday for the two Eves, but confirm each on mta.info the week before, because the MTA posts holiday plans late. If you drive, the parking suspension covers the street-cleaning rules only: it does not cover no-standing or no-parking signs that apply every day, and the city says you can park at a No Stopping, No Standing or No Parking sign on a major legal holiday only if the rule is not normally in effect seven days a week.
