New Year's Eve in Times Square: how it works, what to bring, and how to get home

You will stand in a pen for hours and cannot leave it. Here is how the night works, what the rules were last year, and the easier ways to see midnight.

The short answer

The ball starts down the One Times Square flagpole at 11:59 p.m. and takes 60 seconds, and in past years the viewing pens opened at 3 p.m. There are no portable restrooms, and if you leave a pen you cannot return to it. The 2026-27 lineup, pen rules and subway plan are not announced yet; everything here is the 2025-26 pattern from the Times Square Alliance and the MTA. The no-pen alternative, the Central Park Midnight Run, costs up to $74.02 (checked September 2026).

How the night works

The Times Square Alliance runs the event. The ball is Waterford Crystal, 12.5 feet across and 12,350 pounds, with 5,280 crystals, per the Alliance. It starts its 60-second descent down the One Times Square flagpole at 11:59 p.m., reaching the bottom at midnight, and more than a ton of confetti is typically released. Last year added a second red-white-and-blue release a few minutes after midnight for the national 250th anniversary. The TV broadcast, ABC's Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve in 2025-26, books the performers; the 2026-27 lineup and hosts are not announced.

Pens and arrival

In past years the Alliance said the viewing areas open at 3 p.m., and the celebration starts shortly before 6 p.m. It gives no official arrival time. Entry points in 2025-26 were 45th, 49th, 52nd and 56th Streets on both Sixth and Eighth Avenues, with bag searches and, last year, extra screening inside the pens. Our advice: if midnight is the point, arrive near opening and plan on roughly nine hours standing; if you only want the atmosphere, come at 8 or 9 p.m. and accept the back of a far pen.

What you cannot bring, and the bathroom problem

The Alliance's standing list bars backpacks, large bags, umbrellas, lawn or folding chairs, picnic blankets, large coolers, alcohol, drones and weapons, and says all bags are searched. Its FAQ also says there are no portable restrooms in Times Square during the celebration, and that if you leave your viewing area, even to eat in a restaurant, you cannot return to your spot. So the bathroom plan is to go before you enter and to eat and drink lightly. We found no official guidance on hotels or restaurants as alternatives.

Easier ways to see midnight

The NYRR Midnight Run in Central Park is listed for Thursday, December 31, 2026, starting at 11:59 p.m., four miles, with fireworks at midnight. Registration was open when we looked, prices ran up to $74.02, and one option had sold out (checked September 2026). Prospect Park has held a free fireworks party at Grand Army Plaza (music from 10 p.m., fireworks at midnight, RSVP required in 2025); its 2026 edition is not announced. Central Park fireworks were viewable between Bow Bridge and Cherry Hill last year, and outdoor shows can be canceled for weather. A dinner with a window is the comfortable version, and it is not free.

Getting home

In 2025-26 the MTA ran extra service on the A, C and the 42 St Shuttle overnight, with extra LIRR and Metro-North trains out of Grand Central. Street exits at Times Sq-42 St were closed, some stations near the zone (50 St and 49 St among them) skipped stops from midday, and some passageways went one-way. The MTA's notices mentioned no free-fare program. The 2026-27 plan is not posted; check mta.info in the last days of December. Our advice: walk ten blocks away from Times Square before you try a ride, or use a station a few stops off the zone.
