The childcare voucher waitlist
Mayor Mamdani said the city will invite 10,000 low-income children off the childcare voucher waitlist this fall, the first offers in 15 months, out of more than 29,000 waiting. The money is Gov. Hochul's state match, which only flows if the city puts up an equal share, and City Hall has not said where its half comes from.

Mayor Mamdani said ACS will invite waitlisted families to apply on a rolling basis over the coming months, covering 10,000 of more than 29,000 children and prioritizing homeless families, children with special needs and households under 300% of the federal poverty line. Gothamist reported $475 million in state money is set aside to clear the waitlist, and Chalkbeat reported the state match only flows if the city puts up an equal share that City Hall has not yet identified.
