An unsanctioned crowd that splintered off the Dominican Day Parade onto Dyckman Street in Inwood turned deadly on Aug. 9 when 23-year-old Steven Bodnar was stabbed during a brawl and died. With another 'Takeover' gathering rumored online, the city is testing whether a massive police deployment and street closure can head off repeat violence in Inwood and Washington Heights.

The NYPD deployed roughly 700 officers across Inwood and Washington Heights and closed Dyckman Street end to end for the weekend to prevent a rumored 'Dominican Dyckman Takeover Pt 3,' a week after Steven Bodnar, 23, was stabbed to death during a gathering that broke off from the Dominican Day Parade. Council Member Carmen De La Rosa said the parade itself went off without a hitch but the after-crowd safety plan broke down as visitors poured in from Connecticut and Long Island, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in property and vehicle damage.
