Daria Serkov, 15, was killed Friday around 9 p.m. when a truck driver turning right from East 14th Street onto First Avenue struck the Citi Bike she was riding with a 16-year-old friend. She was the fourth cyclist killed on an eight-block stretch of First Avenue in the past decade.
The NYPD says a 57-year-old man driving a commercial truck was heading west on East 14th Street and turning onto First Avenue when he hit the bike, which was making the same turn [11]. He stayed at the scene and has not been charged, and the Highway District's Collision Investigation Squad has the case [11]. The Post reports the vehicle was a hydro excavation truck belonging to New Jersey company Badger Daylighting, which said it was "devastated" and is cooperating with police [8]. The crash landed the same week Mayor Mamdani unveiled a revised Vision Zero plan built around new pedestrian-only districts and a crackdown on reckless drivers, light on specifics [11].

Belmont Park reopened Friday with a new five-story, roughly 300,000-square-foot grandstand, a public infield for the first time in the track's history, and general admission at $7 in advance.
The Elmont track came back after a three-year overhaul that replaced the grandstand, rebuilt four racing surfaces and added a one-mile synthetic course that allows winter racing [36]. The new building is a fraction of the roughly 1.25-million-square-foot barn it replaced, which bought room for green space, a paddock twice its old size, and that infield [36]. Only the first two floors are open and opening weekend was capped at 6,000; the luxury suites and an event space overlooking the Manhattan skyline arrive in spring 2027 [36]. Marc Forgione runs the Turf Club kitchen, and the LIRR's Elmont-UBS Arena station has free shuttles to the gate on race days [36].

The General Debate runs Tuesday through Saturday, First Avenue is closed from East 41st to East 48th Street, and the city has declared Monday through Friday Gridlock Alert days.
East 44th through East 47th Streets are shut between First and Second Avenues each day, and East 42nd Street closes between First and Second while meetings run, generally until about 9 p.m. [26]. The East 42nd Street exit off the FDR is blocked, and stretches of the highway may close with little warning as the Secret Service moves up to 200 dignitaries and their families between hotels, consulates and airports [26]. Cars and bikes can still take the First Avenue tunnel north through the zone, ferry service may be disrupted, and street-parking restrictions are already posted [26]. Officials say there are no known credible threats; expect police on the water and in the air, and demonstrations across Midtown [26].

Before the Mets beat the Phillies on Saturday, they raised Carlos Beltrán's No. 15 at Citi Field, the 12th number the club has retired [54]. Then Beltrán explained the number. His wife Jessica was born on Dec. 15. "Decidí llevar el número 15 porque el cumpleaños de Jessica es el 15 de diciembre. Así de romántico soy," he told the crowd, and said that long before anyone associated the number with him, it already had a place in his heart [54]. Beltrán, who left the Mets manager's job in 2020 after 76 days without running a game, was asked Saturday whether he would ever take it again: "Being a manager in Major League Baseball is a huge commitment - very huge commitment," he said, and laughed that he likes being a dad [67].
